CHICAGO--Wheat fell Friday morning on speculation that rainfall this weekend may help prospects for thirsty crops in eastern parts of the U.S. southern Great Plains. Corn also declined while soybeans rose slightly.
Light rain is expected in the southern Plains this weekend, and precipitation in the next 15 days will help the eastern half of the winter-wheat belt that runs from Colorado to Ohio, according to forecaster Commodity Weather Group. Still, the western half of the plains will only see "patchy relief" from the weekend showers, CWG said in a Friday report.
With electronic trading paused until the open-outcry session starts at 9:30 a.m. ET, Chicago Board of Trade wheat futures for May delivery dropped 9 cents, or 1.3%, to $6.67 a bushel.
Corn futures for May delivery fell 3 1/4 cents, or 0.7%, to $4.96 3/4 a bushel in Chicago trading.
Soybean futures for May delivery gained 1 3/4 cents, or 0.1%, to $14.77 a bushel on the CBOT.
