CHICAGO--U.S. soybean futures eased in overnight trading, continuing a modest retreat from an eight-month high reached this week amid speculation that demand from China may cool. Corn and wheat also declined.
After rising Wednesday to $14.95 1/4 a bushel, the highest closing price for a front-month contract since last July, soybean futures continued falling on reports by Reuters that Chinese importers of the oilseed defaulted on purchases of at least 500,000 metric tons of U.S. and Brazilian crops. Analysts said Chinese buyers have struggled to secure credit due to losses in processing soybeans.
With electronic trading paused until the open outcry session starts at 9:30 a.m. EDT, Chicago Board of Trade soybean futures for May delivery were down 7 cents, or 0.5%, at $14.75 1/4 a bushel.
CBOT May corn futures dropped 1/2 cent, or 0.1%, to $5.00 3/4 a bushel.
CBOT May wheat futures declined 4 3/4 cents, or 0.7%, to $6.57 1/2 a bushel.
