Malaysian Planters Will be Hit by Indonesian Ownership Change

Malaysian planters will be most affected by any change in plantation ownership laws in Indonesia, says CIMB’s Ivy Ng in a note following media reports that lawmakers are drafting a bill to limit foreign ownership in plantations to 30%, from the current 95%. The news coupled with a recent sharp correction in CPO prices may negatively impact sentiment on Malaysian planters, in particular, Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd (2445.KU) and Genting Plantations Bhd. (2291.KU) which have significant exposure to Indonesian estates, she says. With the exception of Wilmar International Ltd. (F34.SG), the impact on Singapore-listed planters will be “minimal”, as they are majority-owned by Indonesians. At the end of the day, it is still uncertain if the bill will be passed, she says as it would also be difficult to implement. CIMB is maintaining Neutral on the sector as the bill is only in its initial stages, and unlikely to be implemented retrospectively.
