Malaysia’s crude-palm-oil production and end-month palm oil stockpiles fell sharply in December as severe flooding hit production.
According to the Malaysian Palm Oil Board Monday, Malaysia’s December crude-palm-oil production fell 22% from a month ago to 1.4 million metric tons.
End-December stockpiles fell 12% from a month ago to 2.0 million tons, reversing five straight months of gains that pushed stockpile levels to a 20-month high in November. Palm oil exports were flat.
Malaysia, the world’s second largest palm-oil producer, is facing widespread flooding due to a severe monsoon. The floods are hampering palm-oil production and logistics ahead of the festive Lunar New Year holidays in which demand from China is expected to pick up, sending up global benchmark crude-palm-oil futures in Malaysia to a six-month high last week.
