SASKATOON (Dow Jones)--The Canadian Wheat Board's average price projections for malt barley marketed during the 2006-07 (August-July) crop year are unlikely to see much more of an increase over the next few months, as tight feed grain supplies will likely keep producers from delivering their barley to the board, a CWB analyst said Friday at the annual Crop Production Week in Saskatoon. CWB market analyst Jason Newton pointed out a number of international market factors that have supported barley prices during the current crop year, with Australian drought problems the primary driver in the market. While Canada had more malt barley to market this year due to a better quality crop, the CWB is already heavily sold on malt barley and will need to increase its selection in order to take further advantage of the continued strength in the international markets, said Newton. That being said, Newton placed Canadian malt barley exports in 2006-07 at about 1.25 million metric tons, from roughly 800,000 tons the previous year. However, internationally, the trade in malt barley should be down slightly, as high prices have caused some end users to look at other options. Newton added that high North American feed grain prices, driven in part by the U.S. corn market, would keep more feed barley in the domestic market instead of being exported by the CWB.
