KUALA LUMPUR (Dow Jones)--The Malaysian government is mulling a request by
oil palm planters to pay less windfall tax, the New Straits Times reported
Tuesday, quoting a minister.
"The Malaysian Estate Owners' Association and a few big oil palm planters
have expressed their opinion on the windfall tax threshold level," said
Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Peter Chin.
"I've instructed the Malaysian Palm Oil Board to study their request. After
that, I'll consult the Treasury, because windfall tax collection is done by the
Customs Department," he added.
Under the current structure, planters are taxed on the difference between the
threshold price of MYR2,000 a metric ton for crude palm oil and the higher
selling price, but planters want the threshold price to be higher, the daily
said.
