KUALA LUMPUR (Dow Jones)--Global vegetable oil traders, analysts and
government officials forecast prices in a wide range during a three-day
conference organized by the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives that ended Thursday.
Following are outlooks given by some of the key forecasters:
-Dorab Mistry, director, Godrej International: The benchmark BMD third-month
CPO futures may test MYR2,100 a metric ton in next few weeks but fall to
MYR1,500 during the second half of 2009; RBD palm olein may fall to $500/ton
free-on-board, Malaysia; crude soyoil to $500/ton, FOB Argentina ports
post-April and soybean futures on the Chicago Board of Trade to $7 a bushel.
-Thomas Mielke, director, ISTA Mielke GmbH: Crude palm oil prices may rise by
$70-$100 and average around $640/ton, cost-insurance-and-freight Rotterdam
during the first half compared with the current price of around $590. Crude oil
prices may trend toward $55-$60 a barrel the by end of the year. RBD palm olein
may rise to an average price of around $670/ton, FOB Malaysia, up from around
$610-$620. Palm kernel oil prices may rise to $660/ton, CIF Rotterdam, from
$585, with the discount to coconut oil narrowing.
-James Fry, managing director, LMC International: BMD CPO futures may fall to
MYR1,400-MYR1,500/ton this year if there is a fall in crude prices. CPO in the
European Union may fall below $500/ton.
-Richard Kastilani, Director, Tropical Oils Products Ltd.: BMD CPO futures
may trade in a range of MYR1,550-MYR2,200/ton for the next four months. Good
global harvest of oilseeds such as sunflower and rapeseed and crude oil around
$35-$45/barrel may pull CPO prices below $400/ton from $550.
-M.R. Chandran, senior group advisor, Platinum Energy: CPO prices may rise to
MYR2,200 by June 2009.
-Anne Frick, vice president, Futures Research, Prudential Bache Commodities:
CPO prices may move between MYR1,700 and MYR2,300 for the rest of 2009. CBOT
soyoil prices unlikely to fall below 26 cents/pound.
-Sandeep Bajoria, chief executive, Sunvin Group: CPO prices may move between
MYR1,850 and MYR2,250/ton until June 2009.
-Peter Chin, Malaysia's Minister for Plantation Industries and Commodities
(during an interview with Dow Jones Newswires March 5): CPO prices likely to
move between MYR1,800-MYR2,000/ton for the next few months.
The benchmark third-month May CPO futures on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives
ended MYR60 lower Thursday at MYR1,920 off a high of MYR2,026 reached during
the course of the conference - but close to levels at which the contract was
before it began.
Crude soyoil is now being offered around $615/ton, FOB Argentina.
CBOT March soybeans ended 14 cents lower Wednesday at $8.75/bushel.
