SAO PAULO (Dow Jones)--Brazil's 2007-08 soy crop is 82% sold as of July 11,
agribusiness consultancy Celeres said Monday.
Sales advanced just 1% since July 4, but have been faster overall this year
than the country's five-year average of 72% sold, due to demand from
international markets, according to Celeres.
The northeastern producer states have sold 95% of their production, while the
center-west soy belt has sold 90% of its crop, with the No. 1 producer state,
Mato Grosso, having sold 92% as of July 11, said Celeres.
In the south, 67% of the crop has been sold, with No. 2 producer state Parana
selling 70% and No. 3 Rio Grande do Sul selling 62%.
Celeres estimates Brazil harvested 59.7 million metric tons of soybeans this
season. The harvest is over, and planting of the new crop begins in October.
Soy Exports
Celeres also said that Brazilian soy exports reached the highest level in 10
years.
Celeres said 13.8 million tons of soy were exported in the first six months
of 2008, with around 50% going to China.
High soy prices also boosted Brazil's soy revenue to $5.8 billion in the
first half of 2008, up almost 70% compared to the same period in 2007.
Celeres said the average price was $420 for a ton of soybeans in the first
half of 2008 versus $266 in the same period a year before.
Brazil is the No. 2 soy producer behind the U.S.
