BUENOS AIRES (Dow Jones)--Argentina will grow 3.7 million metric tons of
sunflower seeds during the 2009-10 season, sunflower seed association Asagir
said Thursday.
That's up sharply from 3 million tons last season, when drought caused a
steep decline in yields.
Sunflower seed planting recently kicked off, primarily in the northern area,
with 5.1% seeded as of Wednesday, according to the Buenos Aires Cereals
Exchange.
The Buenos Aires exchange has forecast planting at 2.22 million hectares,
significantly higher than the 2 million hectares expected by the Rosario Grain
Exchange. The Rosario exchange forecasts production of 3.4 million tons.
Estimates for Argentina's 2009-10 sunflower seed production in millions of
metric tons (MT) or millions of hectares (HA).
